If you are like me there must be times when you just want to escape, escape everyday routine, escape stress, escape the hoards of commuters or congestion of traffic. If you have the opportunity for a sabbatical, a career break or some garden leave we have the knowledge to help you get away! Whether it be for a couple of weeks or a couple of months here are some great destinations for a great escape!
First top recommendation would be Northern Australia - very large, diverse and wild meaning that it can cope with whatever big adventure you would like to do; camping under magnificent starlit skies and exploring upon ancient natural wonders. The gateway to this region is the town of Darwin, rich in indigenous history and a melting pot of culture and cuisine with some outstanding beaches making the city it an ideal place to linger awhile before travelling into the Red Centre.
The red centre is more than just Ayers Rock or Uluru as it is becoming known. Here you will enter an ancient universe of Aboriginal ancestry, legend and sacred spiritual significance. Uluru is an awe inspiring natural phenomenon that changes hue from sunrise to sunset appearing to give it life and its own movement. The nearby Kata Tjutu, known as the Olgas are other ancient rock formations that rise from the dusty desert landscape. An incredible site and an outstanding area for hiking.
By complete contrast consider the most northern island of the Great Barrier Reef for remoteness and luxury think. Lizard Island is isolated but worth the travel effort to take time out on pristine sandy beaches, snorkel or dive in crystal clear waters and be indulged in a luxury resort hotel, total paradise!
Our next ‘great escape’ recommendation is South America. You simply must go to the Atacama Desert once in your lifetime, this is probably one of our most favourite places on Earth! Enjoy the flight up the spine of the Andes, to arrive at an eco-lodge and spend your days being active in the incredible environment and then relaxing with a range of wellness options: Shimmering, bright white salt lakes that are fished by long legged, pink flamingo, explore trails amongst the sand hills and dried river beds of the Moon Valley, rise early to witness the hot geysers throw steaming water 60 metres into the dawn sky, hike to the summit of a 6,000 metre volcano and soak up extraordinary views across Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. The desert landscape, the driest in the world, can best be described as crazy with rock formations and layers of natural minerals are said to give the locals their positive energy and good vibes!
My final suggestion is to take time out in the deep soulful canyons of Utah, Colarado and Arizona – Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Arches, to name a few. Once again you will feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the splendours of the natural wonders of the world. At two billion years old, rock layers have been exposed by rivers that run deep and winds that whip around the cavernous earth. Around the top US National Parks follow snaking trails that were once the footsteps of the Native Americans who inhabited these spectacular places. There are many other activity options to meet any travellers preferred way: helicopter trips, horse trails, walking trails, hiking, camping, Rim hotels, boat trips, restaurants and bars all provided to you to maximise your experience of these amazing parks notably the shifting desert light and dazzling colours that play upon the vistas.
